Is Free A Bad Word?
This is going to be more of a commentary than it will be an article. It’s just something that I have come across lately and I really am at a loss for words.
I offer web design services and I am being trained by one of the best so I’m not just somebody who decided to do web design with no experience and started offering it as a service. Anyway, I have recently come across two local organizations that I have offered free web design services (at least $500 value). I also told them what could be done to make their website more effective and more useful for their organization. All free of charge. I did tell them that they would have to pay for hosting and the domain name which would be less than $50 per year. That, I have no control over.
The one organization, the person who started it knows me through our kids the other organization; I offered to meet them face-to-face so we could talk. Do you know I didn’t get a single response from either of them? No, no thanks. No, sure let’s meet. No, sorry I can’t afford the hosting and domain. Nothing! That floors me. Five years ago if somebody would’ve offered me a free website, I would’ve taken it in a heartbeat. I would’ve come up with the $50 dollars to get my domain and hosting account.
I’m not the only one that this happened to. I know of a company who wanted to donate some machinery (thousands of dollars worth) the only stipulation was that somebody had to show him they could run it and they turned it down.
I have been seeing all kinds of news shows and articles talking about how people are pinching their pennies and watching what they spend their money on and are looking for the freebies so tell me why aren’t businesses doing the same thing? Have business owners, organizations, etc not learned from the current economic status? Or are businesses and organizations too busy to response or so picky that they want the money and not the product/service? Beats me. I’m just surprised that with everybody crying the blues about their money situation, that I couldn’t even give my services away free.
